Future Leaders of York is a unique opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors that encourages life-long responsible community participation.
Through interaction and problem solving with peer and community leaders, students:
- Learn about York County government, business, human services, and cultural arts
- Meet students from other York County schools
- Develop your leadership skills
- Discuss issues with community leaders
In addition to a weekend retreat and 7 one-day sessions, the students plan a community service project and are matched with an established community leader as a mentor. Thanks to a sizeable grant from the York County Community Foundation, students learn about informed giving and grant-making, both in theory and in actual practice.

Class of 2013
Quotes from FLY Graduates:
“From the retreat to the graduation, I enjoyed every minute of it. It taught me to be a better leader and how to have a “bigger voice” in my community. I used to want to get away from York and stay away. Now, I’m still going away but I will return and help make it a better place.” – Imani Studivant, Eastern York High School, FLY Class of 2011
“My experience was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about my hometown and how to make it better with proper leadership.” – Ahleah Miles, York Suburban High School, FLY Class of 2011
How to Apply:
Students are selected by their respective school districts in late Spring for participation the following school year, and represent most public and private high schools in York County.
Sponsoring organizations are encouraged to look beyond typical school leadership criteria when selecting participants in order to identify previously untapped leadership potential.
Participating students are charged a tuition of $250, which in some cases is covered by the sponsoring organization. This fee does not, however, cover the true cost of the program, and Leadership York relies on the generosity of York County's business and philanthropic community in order to offer this training in community involvement to our youth.
- Students interested in becoming a Future Leader of York should apply through their high school guidance office.
