Leadership York alumni are more than graduates—they are changemakers, advocates, and visionaries. Through their commitment to service and passion for progress, they shape a brighter future for York County and beyond. These awards celebrate the ripple effect of their leadership—the lives they’ve touched, the causes they’ve championed, and the legacy they continue to build in our community.

Outstanding Alumnus of the Year

Each year, Leadership York recognizes one outstanding alumnus for their contribution to the greater good in our community. Graduates from any of Leadership York's programs are eligible.

Please consider nominating a fellow Leadership York class member or any LY alumni for the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award. This award is designed to recognize exceptional graduates from our programs. Submissions are collected year-round.

Nominees should meet the following criteria:

  • Be an active volunteer in the York community for a minimum of 6 years since graduating from a Leadership York program.

  • Hold a leadership role with a nonprofit or elected/appointed position on which they have served at least one term.

  • Making a visible impact in the York community through dedicated community service.

*Note: Volunteer, community, and board service that extends outside of the individual’s specific career carries more weight in the selection process.

Leadership York Names Joan Mummert as Outstanding Alumnus of the Year 2025

Each year, Leadership York recognizes one outstanding alumnus for their contributions to the greater good in our community. This year’s Outstanding Alumnus of the Year is Joan Mummert. The Outstanding Alumnus of the Year selection committee is comprised of past recipients of Leadership York’s Alumnus of the Year award and Leadership York staff.

Joan Mummert (NLA 2011, Board of Directors 2016–2021) was honored as the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year for her distinguished nonprofit leadership and civic engagement.

Mummert recently retired after serving 17 years as President and CEO of the York County History Center, where she led a $30 million campaign to create a nationally recognized cultural campus. Her career spans over 40 years and includes leadership roles with Girls Inc., Youth for Understanding, Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital, and the Maryland Historical Society.

Her board service includes York Rotary, White Rose Leadership Institute, York County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Leadership York. Mummert continues to contribute to the community through her involvement with the Children’s Chorus of York and the Give Local York Advisory Committee.

Alumni in Action

The Alumni in Action Award honors Leadership York alumni who make an immediate and meaningful impact in their communities after completing a program. This award was inspired by its inaugural recipient, Fred Walker, whose dedication and leadership set the standard for future honorees.

Sharee McFadden (LTP 2020) received the Alumni in Action award for her impactful leadership across multiple sectors. With more than 15 years of experience in community development, youth mentorship, public relations, and advocacy, McFadden is the founder of InJOYourLife Consulting. Her leadership extends across organizations such as The Grotto Community Center, Keystone Kidspace, Braided River Collective, and the YWCA’s Racial Justice Committee. She is also a mentor, cheerleading coach, and champion for historically marginalized communities. A Philadelphia native who has called York home for over 20 years, McFadden brings bold, joyful purpose to all she does.

Partner of the Year

Michele mummert with the york county community foundation accepted the outstanding partner of the year award on their behalf, present by leadership york executive director, Wilda reahm-alessi.

Partner of the Year recognizes an individual(s) or organization’s support of Leadership York and commitment to community leadership development.

York County Community Foundation (YCCF) was named Outstanding Partner of the Year for its continued investment in youth leadership and community collaboration. In 2025, YCCF committed $20,000 to support Leadership York’s Future Leaders of York (FLY) program, enabling students to award grants to nonprofit projects that address pressing community needs. YCCF also introduced students to its online grantmaking platform, offering real-world experience in informed giving.
